About The Review Bench

We are a small editorial team that reviews consumer technology under a deliberately unfashionable principle: take the time to test things properly, and write what you actually think.

What we do

The Review Bench publishes long-term reviews of consumer products across ten categories: audio and headphones, fitness and wearables, smart home, networking and Wi-Fi, privacy and security, laptops and monitors, kitchen and appliances, AI software, gaming and PC hardware, and crypto and fintech.

"Long-term" has a specific meaning for us. With rare exceptions, we don't publish a review until we've used the product for at least four weeks of regular daily use, and where the product is meant to live with you (a soundbar, a smart-home hub, a router, a password manager), we keep using it and updating the review at the three-month and twelve-month marks. We say so on every review.

What we don't do

We do not run affiliate links, including hidden ones. We do not accept sponsorship from manufacturers or retailers. We do not retain review units; products are either purchased at retail by a member of the team or, when a vendor sends a sample, returned at the end of the testing window.

We do not publish AI-generated articles as editorial. Every byline on this site corresponds to a real reviewer with a disclosed background and a disclosed beat. You can read their full profiles on our reviewers page.

Our full editorial-independence policy is on the Ethics & Independence page, and our testing methodology is documented on the Methodology page.

The team

The Review Bench has eight reviewers, each assigned to a defined beat:

Editorial corrections

When we make a factual mistake, we correct it inline and add a dated correction note at the bottom of the review. When the correction materially changes our recommendation, we say so at the top.

Where a product changes meaningfully after we publish — for example, a firmware update that changes how a router behaves, or a price change that affects whether we'd still recommend it — we update the review and bump the "last updated" date. We never silently revise.
