Overview
Oura Ring is now in its fifth hardware generation and second decade as a company, and the Gen 5 ring is the most refined product they’ve shipped. The ring is thinner than the Gen 4, the battery lasts a useful amount longer, the sensor stack has been upgraded, and the software platform — now four major versions deep — has matured into one of the best sleep and recovery trackers on the market.
The Oura proposition has always been clear: it’s a screen-free recovery tracker that stays out of your way. No notifications, no watch face, no workout interruptions. You wear it; it tracks your sleep, your skin temperature, your heart-rate variability; you check the app in the morning and see what it has to say.
The Gen 5 doesn’t change that philosophy. It refines it. After twelve weeks of testing the Heritage Silver in size 9, alongside a parallel Whoop 5 worn on the opposite hand, we’ve come to like the Oura more than we expected.
How we tested
We wore the Oura Ring Gen 5 24/7 for twelve weeks alongside a Whoop 5 strap (reviewed separately) for direct comparison. We compared sleep-stage breakdown across overlapping nights, tracked battery life across charge cycles, and used the Oura readiness score as our primary morning-readiness check for two consecutive training weeks.
We also tested cycle tracking and skin-temperature trend tracking with female test subjects (one of our reviewers and two volunteer testers across the twelve-week window) to evaluate the women’s-health features that are a stated Oura strength.
What works
Sleep tracking. Oura’s sleep-stage breakdown remains the gold standard for consumer wearables. Across 84 nights of side-by-side testing, the Oura and Whoop agreed on stage transitions within 5-7 minutes on average, with the Oura showing slightly more granular awake-period detection. Subjectively, both devices produced sleep reports we found credible; neither produced a report we’d dismiss.
Battery life. The Gen 5 hits 7-8 days per charge in our testing — a meaningful improvement over the 4-5 days we got from the Gen 4. Charging is via the included puck, takes about 80 minutes from empty, and integrates well into a once-a-week routine.
Skin-temperature sensing. This is the unsung Oura feature. The Gen 5’s skin-temperature sensor is more accurate than its predecessors, the trend-tracking algorithms have matured, and the data is genuinely medically interesting — useful for cycle prediction in women’s health, illness early-warning, and seasonal-acclimatization tracking. We had one test subject identify a developing cold 18 hours before symptoms appeared based on the Oura’s temperature trend. That’s anecdote, not data, but the sensor is good enough to make those anecdotes plausible.
Form factor. The ring’s central virtue is that you forget about it. Within five days of starting our test, we were no longer thinking about the ring on our hand. It doesn’t snag on weights, doesn’t get in the way of cycling gloves, doesn’t interfere with anything. The Gen 5’s slightly thinner profile makes this even more true than the Gen 4.
Cycle and women’s-health tracking. Oura’s cycle tracking, ovulation prediction, and pregnancy-mode features are deeper than any major competitor’s. The medical-grade caveats are appropriately conservative (Oura is clear that the ring is not a medical device). Across our test subjects’ three-month windows, cycle-phase predictions tracked with reported subjective experience.
Where it falls short
Membership pricing. The Oura Membership ($5.99/month or $69.99/year) is the friction point. The ring works without it — you’ll get sleep tracking, basic activity tracking, and skin-temperature data. But the readiness score (which is the primary daily-decision metric most users will rely on), daytime stress tracking, and the Sleep Optimization features all require active membership. We don’t object to the price, but the bundling is annoying: you’ve already paid $349-$549 for the hardware.
No screen, all phone. Same complaint as Whoop. Every interaction with your data happens on the phone app. For users who specifically don’t want to be on their phone all day, this is a real drag, and we found ourselves checking the Oura app more often than we wanted to.
Workout auto-detection. Cycling, walking, and running auto-detection works most of the time, but not reliably enough to trust. We had two cycling sessions during the test block that the ring failed to log, and three brisk walks that were flagged as runs. For workout tracking, you’ll want a separate device — a watch, a phone, or manual entry into the Oura app.
Cost on damage or loss. $349-$549 is a lot to lose. We dropped one of our test rings down a sink drain in week six and replacing it required reaching out to Oura, going through the warranty-or-no-warranty assessment, and ultimately paying for a replacement. (Oura was responsive; the cost was real.) For a device you wear in the shower, while doing dishes, while changing tires, this risk is non-trivial.
Comparison to alternatives in the category
Whoop 5 ($30/month or $239/year subscription) is the most direct competitor for screen-free recovery tracking. Whoop is better for explicit training-strain tracking and for users with a Whoop-using coach. Oura is better for sleep, women’s health, and users who don’t want subscription overhead beyond the optional membership. We reviewed Whoop separately.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 9 cover overlapping recovery use cases but with watches; if you want a watch, those are the answers. Oura is for users who specifically don’t.
Samsung Galaxy Ring is the most direct hardware competitor — comparable form factor, similar daily-readiness metrics, deeper Galaxy-ecosystem integration on Android. We’ve been testing one separately and the gap is closing, though Oura’s sleep-tracking implementation remains the more polished platform.

The Oura Ring Gen 5 is the recovery tracker we’d recommend for users who want excellent sleep and readiness data without wearing a watch and without committing to a Whoop-style subscription. The hardware is refined, the software has matured, and the form factor is genuinely unobtrusive in a way no watch can match.
The Membership pricing is the friction point — it puts the readiness score behind a paywall that we’d argue should be included with the hardware. But $5.99/month is small compared to most subscription wearables, and the alternative (no Membership) still gives you a working sleep tracker.
For sleep-focused users, women’s-health users, and anyone who specifically does not want a wrist-worn device, Oura Gen 5 is the recommendation. For athletes who want training-load and strain metrics, Whoop or a watch is still the better answer.
The fifth-generation Oura Ring is a thoughtful evolution: thinner profile, improved sensor stack, longer battery, and a maturing software platform that has quietly become one of the best sleep and recovery trackers we've used. Oura's screen-free, no-notification approach won't suit users who want training-load metrics during a workout, but for daily readiness, sleep tracking, and stress-pattern awareness, it has earned its place.
