Overview

Whoop occupies a strange position in the wearables category. The hardware is, by design, the least feature-laden product in any premium athlete’s consideration set — no screen, no notifications, no GPS, no music, nothing but a strap with sensors. The product is the platform, and the platform is rented, not bought.

The Whoop 5 is the company’s fifth-generation strap, and the most refined hardware they’ve shipped. The new sensor module measures heart rate and SpO2 with better fidelity than the Whoop 4, the battery lasts about a day longer per charge, and the strap is meaningfully smaller and more comfortable. None of these are revolutionary changes; they’re the iterative improvements you’d expect on a device this far along.

What hasn’t changed is the business model: you pay $239/year (or $399 for two years, or $30/month month-to-month) for the hardware-and-software bundle. Cancel, and the strap is paperweight. After twelve weeks of testing, the question isn’t whether Whoop’s metrics are good — they are — but whether the model still makes sense in 2026 against credible non-subscription alternatives.

How we tested

We wore the Whoop 5 24/7 for twelve weeks alongside an Oura Ring Gen 5 (reviewed separately) on the opposite hand and a Garmin Fenix 9 Pro Solar on the wrist. We compared sleep-stage breakdown against the Oura, heart-rate accuracy against a Garmin HRM-Dual chest strap during 22 structured workouts, and used the Whoop strain and recovery scores as our primary recovery-metric input for two consecutive training weeks to evaluate them in real-world decision-making.

We also went through the Whoop coach-platform onboarding flow with a former coach as test subject, to evaluate the platform’s coach-facing features (which are a meaningful differentiator).

What works

Strain and recovery scores. This is what Whoop is for, and it’s where the platform earns its keep. The strain score (a 0-21 scale measuring cardiovascular load over a rolling 24-hour window) and the recovery score (0-100, measuring readiness based on HRV, resting heart rate, sleep, and recent strain) are the most polished and actionable recovery metrics we’ve used. Across our twelve-week test block, recovery scores correlated cleanly with subjective readiness on a daily basis after the first 14 days of baseline calibration. Strain scores tracked the cardiovascular cost of varied training (a hard run, a long easy ride, a strength session) in a way that felt consistent and credible.

Sleep tracking. Whoop’s sleep coach has improved each generation and the v5 implementation is the most refined to date. Sleep-stage breakdown (light, deep, REM, awake) compared favorably to the Oura Ring on overlapping nights — the two devices agreed on stage transitions to within 5-7 minutes on average, which is well within the variance you’d expect between two consumer sleep trackers.

Hardware refresh. The new strap is smaller (12% by volume, per Whoop’s spec, which matched our subjective experience), lighter, and the battery pack mechanism is improved. We averaged 5.2 days of battery per charge in normal use, versus 4.3 days on a Whoop 4 worn for direct comparison. The screen-free, notification-free design is a feature for users who specifically don’t want a watch on their wrist, and the v5 is the best implementation of that philosophy yet.

Coach platform. If you train with a coach who uses Whoop, the platform integration is genuinely useful in a way no other wearable matches. The coach-facing dashboard surfaces your strain, recovery, and sleep data; lets the coach prescribe training based on it; and provides the kind of structured feedback loop most coaching software lacks. This is the single biggest reason to choose Whoop over Oura.

Where it falls short

The subscription model. Whoop’s pricing is the central friction. At $239/year on the annual plan ($19.92/month effective), the ongoing cost is meaningful. Over a five-year ownership horizon, you’ll pay $1,195 to keep your strap working. By comparison, an Oura Ring Gen 5 is $349 once. A Garmin Fenix 9 is $799 once. The math is not subtle.

We don’t object to subscriptions in principle — many of the best fitness apps are subscription products. But Whoop bundles hardware with the subscription in a way that makes cancellation forfeit a physical product, not just a service. That’s a different proposition, and one that has cost Whoop users when they reconsider their training stack.

No screen, all phone. The Whoop’s screen-free design is intentional, but it means every interaction with your data is on your phone. Quick checks of recovery score, strain accumulation during a workout, or sleep performance all require pulling out a phone. For users who specifically don’t want to be on their phone, this is a real drag — we found ourselves checking the Whoop app more often than we expected, and not always when we wanted to.

Heart-rate accuracy during intervals. Like all optical wrist-worn sensors, the Whoop lags a chest strap during the first few seconds of high-intensity intervals. We measured 4-8 seconds of lag against an HRM-Dual reference at the start of each interval across our test workouts. Steady-state efforts agreed within 3 BPM. This is normal for the technology, but unlike Garmin and Apple, Whoop offers no option to pair an external chest strap for the 5% of users who care about that fidelity.

Premium features. Whoop has been adding AI-driven coaching features (Whoop Coach, journal integration, etc.) to the platform. Some are useful; some feel like value-justification for the subscription. We did not find them disqualifying, but we also did not find them indispensable.

Comparison to alternatives in the category

Oura Ring Gen 5 ($349 one-time) is the most direct competitor for users who want a screen-free recovery tracker. Sleep tracking is comparable; the lack of explicit training-load metric is a Whoop advantage but Oura’s general-readiness model has improved. For users without a Whoop-using coach, Oura’s no-subscription pricing is a strong argument.

Garmin Fenix 9 ($699-$899) is a different category entirely — a watch, not a strap — but covers most of the same recovery-and-readiness use cases (HRV-based readiness, training-load context) without subscription cost. If you want a watch, Garmin is the answer.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 ($799) similarly covers recovery and training-load via watchOS 13, again without subscription. Apple-ecosystem athletes have less reason to add a Whoop than they did three years ago.

Verdict

The Whoop 5 is Whoop’s best hardware to date and the platform remains the most polished recovery-tracker in its specific niche. For dedicated athletes already in the Whoop ecosystem, the upgrade from Whoop 4 is worthwhile — better hardware, longer battery, smaller footprint, and a maturing software platform.

For new buyers, the question is harder than it was two years ago. The Oura Ring Gen 5 covers most of the recovery use case at a one-time price; Garmin and Apple cover the training-platform use case in their watches without ongoing subscription. Whoop’s strongest argument is the strain metric (which is genuinely the best in class) and the coach platform (which is a real differentiator for users with a coach who uses it).

If those two specific arguments apply to you, Whoop earns the recommendation. If they don’t, the alternatives have closed enough of the gap that we’d think twice about subscribing.

The verdict

Whoop's fifth-generation strap is a real hardware upgrade — better sensor fidelity, longer battery, smaller footprint — but it ships into a category that has gotten more crowded and more skeptical of the Whoop subscription model. After twelve weeks of testing, the recovery and strain metrics remain the most polished in the category, the platform is the most coach-friendly we've used, and the band is genuinely unobtrusive. But the math problem hasn't changed: you don't own the device, you rent the platform, and the Oura Ring Gen 5 now offers comparable insight without ongoing subscription overhead. For dedicated athletes already in the Whoop ecosystem, the upgrade is worthwhile. For new buyers, it's a closer call than Whoop's marketing suggests.

Do I really lose access to my data if I cancel?

You retain export access to your historical data for a window after cancellation, and Whoop has improved their data-portability tooling. But the strap itself does not function without an active membership — there's no offline mode, no last-30-days view, nothing. If you're uncomfortable with that arrangement, the Whoop ecosystem is not for you.
